... Clos Berger
2020 – Vinous, Rebecca Gibb MW
From a single-hectare parcel, the 2020 Demi-Sec Clos Berger presents a fine, floral nose. Fermented in stainless steel, preserving the bright pineapple and pear fruit. Easy to like and to drink. Pure, fresh and fruit-forward. Lovely balance and freshness despite the sweetness. Youthful but already drinking well. 87
2015 – The Wine Doctor
From a lieu-dit very high up on the plateau, well above the town of Vouvray. This demi-sec cuvée has a very pale hue, barely tinged with a hint of straw. The aromatics, however, go above and beyond in terms of expression, with notes of pithy fruit, especially orange and lemon cream, along with scented notes of crushed white chalk, thyme and mint. It all feels quite classically styled. The palate is tense and no less pithy than the nose suggests, with layers of sweet and concentrated fruit, plenty of charged and lightly chalky energy, as well as quite biting acidity. Fresh, gently sweet at a demi-sec level, but bright with great energy. 92/100 (January 2021)
